Alex Sung is the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and men's Muay Thai instructor with the Positive Impact team. Alex has been involved in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu since 2004 and is a brown belt under Canadian BJJ Black Belt, and MMA pioneer, Curtis Brigham of Winnipeg MB. Alex is currently one of the highest ranking BJJ practitioners in New Brunswick and has competed and placed in some of the largest national and international BJJ/grappling tournaments, such as, NAGA, Grappler's Quest, ADCC Pro and FILA. Through his involvement in Mixed Martial Arts and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Alex has had the honour to train with some of Canada's premier BJJ instructors including: Curtis Brigham, UFC veteran Joe Doerksen, Rowan Cunningham, Sam Johnston and Don Ryan (wrestling). Some of Alex's BJJ/Grappling accomplishments include: - Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Brown Belt - Bronze medallist, 2011 Federation Internationale des Luttes Associess (FILA) World Grappling Championships - Four time North American Grappling Association (NAGA) Champion - First place, 2010 NAGA World Jiu Jitsu Championships, - First place, Grappler's Quest Boston Muay Thai Background Alex began his Muay Thai training in 2000 in Kingston, Ontario but due to military training commitments and eye surgery he was forced from the sport for nearly 2 years. Alex resumed his Muay Thai training in Winnipeg and Brandon, Manitoba in 2003. Over the past 5 years Alex has been fortunate to develop his skills under the guidance of some of Canada's top Muay Thai instructors, such as; Mike Sweeney, Eric Advincula, Philipe Gelinas, Dave Horvath, Bart Curtis, and Oralee Molberg. Professional MMA Background Alex has competed professionally at MMA in both Canada and the United States and holds a professional MMA record of 6-3 (see www.sherdog.com for official stats) Alex has fought in notable MMA promotions such as King of the Cage Canada; Ultimate Cage Wars; Dakota Fighting Championships; Cage Fighting Extreme; and Extreme Caged Combat. Currently Alex is under the tutelage of Muay Thai instructor and strength and conditioning specialist, Heather Sung (also his wife), and is affiliated with Curtis Brigham and the Winnipeg Academy of Mixed Martial Arts. HEATHER SUNG Heather Sung brings many different skills to the Positive Impact MMA Coaching team. Heather is the instructor of the Women's Muay Thai class and is the co instructor for the Men's Muay Thai Class. In addition she instructs the Positive Impact Girls program, the Positive Impact Combat Conditioning program; personal training; Nutrition & Wellness consulting, and Registered Massage Therapy. Heather has trained in martial arts for ten years, starting first with Traditional Martial Arts & Western Style Kickboxing and then moving into Muay Thai kickboxing. Heather has been privileged to train at the Canadian Kickboxing Muay Thai Center under the renowned Kru Guisseppi Denatle and Kru Dave Horvath. During this period of time Heather completed her level three Muay Thai certification test, under the evaluation of legendary K1 kickboxer Duke Rufous. Heather has also trained with Bart Curtis and number two ranked World Kickboxing Federation (WKF) female fighter, Oralee Molberg. Child Care Background Previously owning her own private child care facility, Heather is a certified early childhood educator with seven years of experience working with children of all ages. Personal Training and Holistic Wellness Specialist Heather has a diploma in Fitness and Nutrition and is a member of Canada's Fitness Professionals. She has worked as a nutritional consultant, and has a wealth of experience as a life-coach for various wellness centers geared towards helping people achieve a healthy weight and lifestyle. Heather has experience personal training clients of all experience levels from people looking to lose weight to serious athletes competing in body building and fitness competitions. Registered Massage Therapy Heather is a Registered Massage Therapist, a graduate of the Atlantic College of Therapeutic Massage (ACTM). Heather has completed numerous internships at:
* The Stan Cassidy Rehabilitation Center * Dr. Everest Chalmers Hospital * St. Mary's Health Clinic * 320 hours of clinical experience at Atlantic College of Therapeutic Massage As well, Heather holds an ACTM Sports Massage Certificate for completing 100 hours of sports massage hours as volunteer massage therapist with the University of New Brunswick Sports Clinic, and with various sports teams and events within the community such as: * Canadian Inter University Sports Volleyball Nationals * The Fredericton Marathon * The Spring Sprint for Brain Cancer Research * Base Gagetown Soldiers Appreciation Day Heather is a strong believer in professional development and acquiring new skills, and has completed the following courses in the 2010 year: Muscular Activation, advanced trigger point therapy, functional anatomy, rehabilitation of hamsting injuries, hormonal health assessment, postural re-alignment, and kettle bell training. Heather maintains her first aid certificate and is a Medical First Responder (advanced level).
